Capture One Fujifilm Simulations

  1. A Show of All Fujifilm Film Simulations. Below is a show of all current film simulations from Fujifilm. The image is captured with a Fujifilm X-T4 and the XF 35mm f/1.4 R at f/7.1, ISO 160. I have adjusted levels and white balance prior to applying the film simulations. Images were processed from RAW in Capture One Express.
  2. Capture One FUJIFILM brings custom camera support exclusively for FUJIFILM. The recognized workflow solution, exceptional color handling, and precision editing. Capture One now deliver FUJIFILM film simulations and tethering support. Capture One Express FUJIFILM (Free Download).
  3. Fujifilm Film Simulations Capture One supports a range of Fujifilm Film Simulations like Fujifilm Provia and Fujifilm Velvia when working with Fujifilm RAF raw files. The different Film Simulations are available from the Curve drop-down menu in the Base Characteristics tool in the Color tool tab when working on an applicable Fujifilm RAF raw file.
  4. Dec 03, 2018 To apply Capture One 12’s Fujifilm Film Simulations you need to go to the Base Characteristics tool. You can find this in the Q (‘Quick’) tool tab, though the Capture One interface is infinitely customisable so you could add it to any tool tab you like. Capture One should have selected the camera’s ICC Profile by default.

So it's finally happened:Phase One and Fujifilm have collaborated to bring film simulations to the newest version of Capture One! The film simulations in Capture One work with most of Fujifilm's cameras, except those with the X-Trans I and II sensor (The XPro 1, X-T1 etc.) but why should you care and how do you do it?

Fujifilm has been lauded for years for their in-camera JPEGs and film simulations, and up until recently there was no way to get anything exactly as beautiful as the in-camera JPEGs. There were ICC profiles floating around online but nothing quite as complete or as accurate as the new built-in presets. To use these in Capture One it is rather simple and it allows you to preview each individual simulation just by hovering your mouse over it.

Like so many other Fujifilm users out there, one of the main things that drew me into the X series system was the quality of their jpg files and the film simulations. The colors and details are just stunning, and as someone who grew up with film photography in the 80s, the idea of having film simulations directly in the camera was just perfect!

To select your film simulation, go to your color tab, and scroll down to Base Characteristics. Here you will have two dropdown menus, ICC profile, and Curve. Your camera should already be set for your ICC profile (for me it is X-T3 Generic) and your curve will likely be set to auto. It is this latter setting you want to change. When you click Curve you will see all of your wondrous film simulations! You can see here how these simulations impact your image, with otherwise untouched images of the wondrous Sarha Hanna

To show you all just how accurate these new film simulations are, I took a JPEG+RAW photo of a color checker passport with my Fujifilm X-T3 and brought it into Capture One. As you can see, other than some distortion and vignetting correction happening in the JPEG; the images are functionally identical this is fantastic for those of us that enjoy the Film Simulations that Fuji offers and want to have more control in post production. If you're like me, and only shoot Classic Chrome (or any other specific film sim) you can actually set that as an import preset in Capture One to remove an extra step.

If you are an editorial, portrait, product, landscape or commercial photographer, there is a great chance you’ll be needing fujifilm tethering to Capture One Pro once in your professional career. You might want to show your work directly to your client, or through the computer to avoid the small screen and apply some settings.

The fujifilm tethering is the ideal way to allow your client, art director, or the whole team to see the work on a larger screen, with images displayed live, with or without a specific development mode applied.

This article will clear things up for those of you who might want to try but find it really complex. How to configure the Fujifilm bodies, how to connect to Capture One Pro, and what we can now do with it (further versions of Capture One Pro and firmware updates from Fujifilm will soon allow more features).

Gear needed

First of all, you need some gear, basically what you need is a cable to connect your computer to your camera, the rest is a nice to have, makes life easier, but it’s not necessary to start tethering.

I personally use Tethertools cables to connect my fujifilm X-H1 or my Fujifilm X-T3 to my computer. In my case I need the USB-C to USB-C for one camera, and USB-C to USB-3.0 for the other. But one important thing to take into consideration when buying the cable is to get one long enough. We often start with a short one, but it’s too short from day 1. Go for the 4.6 meter one, the longest from Tethertools, you’ll never be bothered by it being too long, but you’ll always be missing it if you purchase the short one when shooting through any tethering such as in this case fujifilm tethering.

Nonetheless, in the setup i’ll be showing below, i set it up with my Apple USB-C to USB-C cable from my computer, the shoot was going to last 1-2 hours, the computer lasts for 10, I knew i was safe and didn’t have any problem tethering that way over my tripod.

Fujifilm tethering to capture one step by step

  1. On your Fujifilm Camera , open the menu and go to Tools
    1. Connection settings
      1. PC Connection
        1. Set it to USB Auto or USB Fixed
  2. Then connect your USB cable to your camera (if you try beforehand it won’t work), and to your computer.
  3. Finally, once the cable is connected to camera and computer, you can open Capture One Pro
    1. Go to the Tethering tab and you’ll see your camera and all the settings… you’re done and ready to shoot !

From now on, you can shoot and you’re tethering to your computer. Furthermore you can shoot by pressing the shutter from CaptureOne Pro or from your camera, both will work and images will be transferred directly. However, at this stage you can’t set film simulations nor can you set the speed, aperture from Capture One, you’ll have to do that from the camera.

My setup for fujifilm tethering to Capture One

  • Fujifilm X-T3 or Fujifilm X-H1
  • Stable & Solid tripod

To assist you in your first setup and trying tethering with your fujifilm camera, you’ll find a simple setup. I use the gear listed above to create a single post, on location, tripod based tethering station. In this case i’m just using my iPhone cable as mentioned above, it works perfectly for shoots requiring compositing for example.
